The Cramps, banda creada formalmente en 1976 en la ciudad de Nueva York, supo conjugar el primitivo rockabilly y el garage de los '60 con el por ese momento naciente punk rock basándose en un sonido muy característico, marcado por la guitarra fuzz de Poison Ivy y la inconfundible voz de Lux Interior, todo mezclado con una estética entre película de serie B, sexo masoquista y glamour barato de Las Vegas. El psychobilly sería impensable sin ellos y su revisión del rock & roll de los '50 será la principal influencia del futuro revival rockabilly y el garage de los '80.
La banda se mantuvo activa hasta la muerte de su cantante en 2009.
